The sizes of violins produced at world are 4/4, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32. In addition, a small number of 7/8, 3/8, and 1/10 sizes are also available. The so-called 4/4 and 7/8 are for adults (in fact, a normal 13 or 14 year old boy can use them), and the 7/8 is made for smaller adults, especially women. All other instruments below 3/4 size are for children. From 1/32 to 3/4, the size changes about a year or so as the child grows in size. There is a relatively large size difference between 1/4 and 1/2, hence the availability of the 3/8 or smaller 1/2 size instruments. As long as you feel comfortable, any size is fine.
